A Bailout? Medical Insurance – Obama Care

I don’t know if anyone else has had these thoughts but here goes. Let me be clear here. I’ve never sold insurance, either life, medical or any other version of the product but I was, by marriage, involved with it for 20 years. Over those years and since, I have noticed how things once were and how things have developed.

I see this Obama Care medical bill as nothing more than a huge bailout for the insurance companies! The politicians (both established parties) can say what they wish but that is the way I see it because the insurance companies got to a point that payouts would probably jeopardize their companies. Cheaper group plans, more rules and regulations by the government controlling what the companies could and must do.

I remember the days before medical insurance became a prominent thing in society. You know the days when your Doctor was a family friend and they still made house calls. I won’t go into the history because there are many good articles on the internet about the subject. This is just one example. http://www.ehow.com/about_7233090_history-medical-insurance.html

I’m just going to stick with what I have experienced over time. I noticed that when insurance came into play with each of these groups I will mention that it did seem very strange to me that the bills always seemed to go higher. When going to your medical doctor, before they took insurance, it seemed to me that one could always reasonably afford the cost. Even a trip to the emergency room was somewhat manageable because there were payment plans. Then as soon as doctor’s offices and hospitals started to really get connected with the insurance companies, the prices seemed to go higher and higher. In a weird twisted way, you kind of had to scramble to be hired by a company that offered medical insurance as a side to the hiring package.

This really hit home while married to my husband. He worked for a very large insurance group, mostly on the life insurance side back in the day when there was still door to door monthly collections. Now, we had really good coverage to say the least. But I saw so many take advantage of a good thing. I can’t tell you how many times I heard “don’t worry the insurance will pay” or “I don’t care about the cost, I’m insured”. Did they ever check their bills for over-charge? Not many. Another form of abuse in my eyes! My point here might be that the medical insurance became a double edged kind of sword. On the one hand you had patients receiving treatment never questioning the charges and on the other the medical practitioners over-charging. I always questioned the latter and, yes, it did happen.

Good examples might be chiropractic, dental, and even massage therapy. I remember when I was going to a chiropractor before insurance companies recognized them as viable. The prices were affordable. That group fought long and hard to get recognized by, I guess, the AMA and insurance companies. The minute they were recognized and able to file claims to insurance companies the prices went up, over a cliff! Then you could see the double edged sword again. “Do you have insurance?” if the answer was yes, your charges were higher when you received a bill. And, of course, many customers, early on, did not have coverage. “Do you have insurance?” if the answer was no, you were able to pay what the original quote of care was per visit. Understandable in a way because the chiropractor didn’t want to lose his previous business. But I do believe this practice was considered insurance fraud. I don’t know such details but there were quite a few chiropractors shut down. I guess you cannot have two prices for different groups.

Same thing happened when I had a lady massage therapist working as a renter from me. She was so excited about being able to submit claims to the insurance companies when the time came around that insurance companies would finally consider massage therapy as necessary and valid. Well she filled out her forms and became certified by the state. Great. Until one day she told me that she was having financial problems and was having a hard time getting me the rent. Well, long story short, she told me she was waiting payments from the insurance companies for the claims she had submitted. I guess she wasn’t thinking when she reveled to me just how much she had been charging the insurance companies and I knew what her rates were to folks that did not have insurance coverage. As said, I had seen this before and told her she would have to leave!! Gee, bad apples make it bad for us all.

Over the years I have noticed that every time insurance is introduced, prices just don’t go down prices only seem to go up. You betcha! Now you can add dental insurance and veterinarian insurance to the mix. I honestly, don’t know if it is the fraud, litigation or just the cost of living that has made prices go over a cliff. I can only assume that insurance companies wanted to make a profit. I think it got to a point that the many arms of insurance within a company could not sustain all the group plans, general increased costs, limitations of medicare, medicaid and still make their profits. My suspicion is just that unsustainable would be key word. Not enough money coming in to offset the claims. Now, I am not trying to protect big insurance companies for many of the deceptive practices but neither can I protect people cheating them either.

This is why I think that The new Obama Care that the politicians passed (without even knowing what was in it) was nothing more than a bail out for the medical insurance industry. A wolf hidden in sheep’s clothing, and this care plan is, certainly, raising its ugly head. Can you tell I have no faith in the political elites up in Washington? They stick their fingers into the pot for power instead of leaving the economy and free market make or break it for any company be it insurance, banks, fanny & freddy, student loans or car dealers. In my opinion if Obama Care is allowed to keep going the prices will never go down and will only go up. It is just in the NATURE of Big Government!

Tom Ogle – Gas Engine 100 MPG – Before the Chevy Volt

I cannot tell you how excited I am! I have been looking at microfiche in libraries, surfing the web, trying to find old archives of the AP and UPI, whatever I could resource. But, seriously, when you do not know a proper name and only remember having read a story from back when we had a gas shortage in the 1970′s and we were relegated to buying gas by odd or even numbered license plates! Finding information on a given story isn’t that easy. But TODAY was a success and I guess I just got lucky typing in those infamous “key words” in the search bar!

Like I said years ago, I read a story about a guy who had found a way to alter the gas engine to get 100 miles per gallon. It was a revelation and my husband and I were really excited reading this article in our local newspaper. We were speculating on just how long it would take this engine to come to market. The gas crisis ended, finally, but then the great gas wars were over too! Life went back to normal and you no longer had to put a lock on your gas tank because people stopped the siphoning of your gas. We, also, never heard of this guy again. No follow up, that I can remember, in our local newspaper or on television at the time. Nothing.

Well, years went by and then we started getting barraged with all the green stuff and gas creeping up in cost yearly. In my course of conversations with my clients I remember always having my memory jogged about this gas and car story especially when we would all feel the crunch of gas in our budgets. Problem was that I could not remember the name of the Texas article or the inventor. People would look at me with a sort of vague stare and would imply it was only a rumor. You know when you get older it kind of hurts your feelings to think that you might be spreading a false a rumor. But what if the story is true? Without the proof of the story you never really have something concrete to stand on.

Now that you know my brief story, I can direct you to the article written by Ron Laytner; Edit International. Ron wrote this article on June 17, 2009, “What Ever Happened to Tom Ogle? Did the world not go green because of a murder? Maybe 2 murders”? Below is only an excerpt but you really really need to read the entire article, which is more like a history of this young man named Tom Ogle who could have changed an industry.

Excerpt:

“The world is telling us to Go Green; from Sesame Street to the Campaign Trail, and Going Green has become as much a marketing tool as a call for action. But what most American’s don’t know is that these problems were solved thirty years ago by the brilliant invention of a Texas high school dropout.

In 1978 I first interviewed Tom Ogle who created a device replacing the carburetor and allowed his 4,000 pound car to get 100 miles per gallon.

Elections & Primaries – Mostly Dog and Pony Show!

I’m sad to say that I think the Presidential Primary Elections have become, what I would call, a dog and pony show! It doesn’t matter what party you are listening to either. This long drawn out Republican Primary is just about as bad as the last Democratic Primary. We get all kinds of promises and once the winners are installed into office the shit hits the fan. Everything they promised is tossed out the window when they are in the Washington Beltway! Primaries are big business for the all the media outlet pun-dents too. And, because of this, the campaign costs have become enormous!

I have been voting for a long time and I have gotten more and more disillusioned every 2 years. I am weary of voting for City, State and Federal officials that really don’t take into account the betterment of the American way of life. I really think that they are all handing us a bill of goods and are (both parties) trying to get rid of Capitalism. One party just does it slower than the other. Does anyone even care about American freedom any longer? I wonder. Just look at the 10,000 or so new regulations this Administration has put out there. Pretty soon they will be regulating when I’m allowed to take a shit. Heck, what has it been 3 years and those jokers in DC, many States and lots of Cities CAN NOT balance a budget??? Where did they go to school, were they ever in math class?

The checks and balances of this government have been turned upside down. Cities take money from their State and are beholden. States take money from the Federal government and they are beholden. Then people take money from all of these entities and then the people don’t want to give up anything because they now feel entitled. It is a vicious cycle. Then the corruption flourishes.

I’m not a rocket scientist so I don’t really understand how the elites draw the electoral lines. That is something that has been a mystery to me for a very long time and, quite frankly, I think most elected officials prefer my stupidity because then there is less likelihood of too many questions about the methods they use from people like me. I’ve even tried to call and write email to talk show hosts because I just don’t understand the legalese that dot gov’s provide on the internet.

All I know is that this is the first time in at least 10 years that one of my local representatives has opposition to his seat. I can’t tell you the countless times that I have gone to the voting booth to write myself in on the ballot because he was running unopposed. I didn’t want his winning to be a landslide! As I see it, officials have made wards, sectors, or whatever you want to call it so that someone has a seat for life.

Primaries, don’t even get me started. I mean only viable 2 parties (who wrote that rule), and the establishment is not giving that up! You have many declared Candidates in a Presidential Election and because the state you live in has crazy, not understandable rules, you can only vote for the selected two. If you are not affiliated with either the democratic or republican party and say you consider yourself an independent you cannot even participate in the so called primary. Would anyone in DC consider a Primary for Independents? Not!

Quite frankly, I think with each election cycle the Congressional Parties have decided who they want to support and just do this dog and pony show to make it look like there are options. That way us schmucks, working in the real world, think there is a choice. They all want the pollsters and the electorate numbers to match up in the end.

It makes me so sad that I have lost faith in the whole election process at many levels but I sure don’t want socialism, a dictator, marxism or communism. What is a person to do? I’ve seen to much history to know better. Oh, I’ll go vote again it is my duty and just hope for the best.

Okay, I’ll cease my thoughts for today. I know this post has been all over the place but it is hard to focus when so many things are going wrong with this Beautiful Country of the United States.

Thanks for reading.

Parenting Challenges Today

I would hate to be a parent now-a-days. The rules and idiotic regulations imposed on children and parents is becoming exhausting! I couldn’t imagine being a young parent starting out in today’s times. It seems to me that as a parent you just, continually, have to look over your shoulder to make sure you aren’t doing anything wrong. This is not to say that there aren’t very, very bad parents walking the streets! I still think that most parents care for and love their children.

I mean, it starts with the baby in the womb. If you even get this far. You go to the OBGYN or Family Doctor and from the get go you are told what you can eat, drink and do, otherwise you might do irreparable damage to your unborn child. Changing your life style to the extreme. The powers that be have made pregnancy into something that is nearly considered life threatening. Get tests for every stage of the pregnancy. I’m beyond the childbearing years but I remember what ridicule I had to endure because I wanted to have a baby Lamaze and trust me when I told people I preferred home delivery, that was a no no. Breast feeding, I was called extreme! Thank goodness I had a good family for support. Child bearing and pregnancy is a very natural process, women were built for the event!

You bring the baby home and right away you have to have the right crib, play pin, car seat, the list goes on and on. There were many children that lived through a side drop down crib. If you are fortunate enough to find a common sense Pediatrician, you are lucky! All to often, I feel, these guys are dosing your kids with things they may or not need. I am really concerned about all the mandated injections! Don’t get me wrong I agree that certain childhood diseases have been stopped but I have doubts about giving immature children medications that alter their mind state.

THEN….. the Kids go to school or should I call them a warehouse or a prison!? Walking through the door to be scanned, frisk, cameras watching, all in the name of “Protection”. (Hum, are cameras in bathrooms now?) Don’t bring any toy that looks like it might hurt another child. No hugs from a Down Syndrome child because that is sexual harassment, no pizza unless it is considered a vegetable, food gestapo checking children’s lunch boxes to make sure the kid’s parent has sent appropriate food to school! Did anyone ever bother to ask where the food is coming from? If your local area is anything like ours the food the cafeterias use is brought in from outside big kitchens and the staff most normally just heat food. So are the school systems providing GMO Foods? Genetically re-engineered foods from Monsanto! And providing loads of Canola (processed rapseed) because butter or olive oil is not better. No naming of Holiday’s unless they are totally benign and secular. No salt, no sugar, no soda. No clothing or a gift from a birthday party because they don’t want to offend other children who weren’t invited to the party. Give a trophy to all the kids and, hell, just pass them because they might feel bad if they got an E (failing grade). Awe poor baby shouldn’t feel like a dummy even if he/she is!!

By the time the kids get to Middle and High Schools things get even worse. Then, of course you’ve got the real clothing wars. Have to hang out shopping, and standing in long lines to get the best Nikki’s, Ipods, and cell phones with text so they can talk till they drop or maybe even use that device to cheat on a test. Hum, nah, parents know that they have to give their kids phones for security. Who has the best technology? Here, I do think that parents have to take responsibility. However, parents have been told what to do so often that they have lost touch with reality and common sense too. Crap, I didn’t give my children a labeled shirt until it was Christmas. Even if that item was affordable. Tennis shoes used to be tennis shoes that were cheap till they slapped a label on them!!

Higher Education. Colleges and Universities stress that registering students have to have a computer. Heck, if this government can entitle free cell phones to the poor why can’t they provide a free computer for each student that registers? (sarcasm) Of course the Professors have a great record too. Try getting a used book. OH what is that?? Professors get great kick back kudos by promoting new books each season, at great expense to the family of the student. Then, of course, parents aren’t even allowed to see their child’s grades because they are adults now and privacy laws apply. Yet, coming soon, parents will have the distinct pleasure of insuring their young adult till the age of 26. I can’t imagine what a parent will think when this hits home. All these things would probably scare any young person from NOT having a child. It is lot to think about and, today, I sure would have second thoughts. (Sarcasm – instant birth control.)

Teachers and Administration’s running our public schools have lost all sense of reason because they are so scared of the regulations and lawsuits. I don’t know what their problem is considering they are mostly tenured and can’t loose their teaching jobs, even if they are in the infamous rubber rooms getting paid for nothing.

You’ve got all this crap going on with Debbie Squires telling parents they don’t know how to take care of their own children and teachers know better! Gee what hootsba. Ms. Squires statement, a video on YouTube because this Huffington Post removed the original version. The Nazi’s, Communists and Chinese (one child per family) and even Islamic Sharia have put teachers and others in charge of the children. It is called indoctrinate them when their are young. If you are a parent pay close attention on the history that is being taught! (Oops, I forgot, Chinese and Sharia doesn’t recognize a girl much). Then, of course, there is the sex education! The parent should decide what to tell a child and when. Watch out what your young children are exposed to by Planned Parenthood! Horrible videos. It is old news from 2008 but still relevant that President Obama has said “Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old,” he said. “I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby. I don’t want them punished with an STD at age 16, so it doesn’t make sense to not give them information.” I wonder if he let his girls watch one of those Planned Parenthood videos?

What is wrong with Congress? Have they lost all their power?
This election cycle has brought up race, faith, and abortion (again), no more than talking points if our Constitution still valid. Congress needs to get on point and concentrate on the economy! But, this topic is for another day.

My thoughts and opinions might upset people but they are my thoughts, they don’t have to be yours.

Foods – The Bad – The Good

Years ago, even before my children were born, I remember the scares the government or the news media reporting how one food or another was bad for you. Some of the first that come to mind were yellow mustard, saccharine, red food dyes (hard to find a red pistachio, lol), bacon and, of course, eggs. Most recently, it is now sugar and salt.

Don’t get me wrong, I realize, that some warnings have great merit but I do get suspicious when a given market is impacted by whatever blurb hit the streets. Good example would be the egg industry. In the name of saving people from their own cholesterol the FDA, Surgeon General, pharmaceutical companies and medical professionals (everyone was on the band wagon) said more than 1 egg a week was no good for you, potentially causing your cholesterol levels to rise. People cut back on their egg intake and the industry was really having problems until a new egg came along. Proving that a safer egg could be produced by feeding with special feed. Egg Land’s Best came along! When that egg company started making a real dent in the market, oh my, that band wagon decided that those pesky eggs weren’t so bad for a person’s cholesterol after all!

I remember that saccharine scare too. We had no need to use it but, non the less, I noticed that everything that was diet or light all of a sudden made a total switch to NutraSweet. What bothered me about NutraSweet was that many parents were letting their children eat it. I read a report, back then it was in the library, that nutrasweet might have some bad side effects in children under eight years of age. I’ve looked for that report since the internet came along and just can’t seem to find it again. What bothered me about the report was that there were three or four independent studies before the release of NutraSweet. The problem for me was that each of the studies had been paid for by the NutraSweet corporation. It could be just me but how is that independent? I just, today, found an article that confirmed what I had read!! At Natural News.com. read the bottom paragraph.

I understand that there are some people with serious health issues but where did the phrase moderation and a person’s own responsibility get lost? I have known many people who have changed their dietary habits that no longer had to be on pharmaceuticals. This isn’t really the message of this article but I wanted to mention this possibility anyway.

Now that I have aged and lived though many of these events or scares. I really look things with a more cynical eye. I just simply don’t trust everything I hear from our band wagons. Often times I think, now, that some people are serving their own agendas.

What I want to really address here is what is going on with the genetically re-engineered seeds and some processed foods. I’ve, long ago, gotten away from processed vegetable oils and have stuck with butter, olive oil, and lard which is very difficult to find now days because it is so politically incorrect. My thought. Anything in moderation!

I used to love eating what I would call junk food. I loved Burger Chef and McDonalds. A burger and fries really hit the spot sometimes. Over the years things changed and I noticed that my occasionally yummy treats didn’t taste quite as good. Many of the fried foods I was eating had an unappealing flavor of bitterness or rancid taste. I was complaining to a co-worker one day and she said often times when one’s palette is not use to eating Canola oil you would find such unfavorable tastes.

Sure enough, when I did a little research on canola and found that many food companies use it now. I guess because it is cheaper to purchase. Canola isn’t very good for you because it is made from rapeseed. There is much information on this product so I need not say more than I just don’t eat at fast food places anymore. An in a nutshell article to read is on this site, Optimal Breathing. http://breathing.com/articles/canola-oil.htm

Monsanto is widely know for their re-engineering of seeds so that they can be patented. There seems to be more information on the internet daily. How come our Band Wagon doesn’t scrutinize them more? Holding small farmers accountable for the air or bees cross or pollinating their crops because Monsanto’s fields are adjacent. It is outrageous. As I see it this is a way to put the small organic or natural farmer out of business. You can view a full documentary “The World According to Monsanto” on YouTube. This video is about 1 hour 49 minutes long so you might want to book mark it at YouTube to save for later viewing.

If you CAN support your local farmer, DO!

I grow a garden every year and I freeze a lot of fruits and veggies when I have a decent crop. When the garden is not producing in the winter I try to support our local farmers. I just got back from shopping at a local Farmer’s Market, they sell goods that are mostly organic and locally grown. If they have hot climate items like citrus fruit they are grown in the U.S. from an organic farmer and they will let you know what farm it came from. Even baked goods do not have strange additives. No GMO’s. If I can’t find something there and shop at our local grocery stores, I at least, buy foods grown in the U.S. because I don’t know what foreign imports use on their crops. My rule is to buy it if it is in season. It isn’t a guarantee but it beats a blank. Again, there is a lot of great information on the internet. All you have to do is type in Organic Farming into your search engine.

Thank you for reading my blog.

This is some real food for thought! Digesting processed food by 2011 TEDxManhattan Fellow: Stefani Bardin

Atlantic City … I’d never been there!

It was a new adventure for me. I wanted to do something different this past Christmas, 2011. I consulted with my adult children and proposed going to Atlantic City instead of celebrating the holidays at home. Traveling to Atlantic City over Christmas was out of the norm so I wasn’t sure how they would take the idea but when I spoke with them they agreed and arrangements were made.

I did have to make some preparations. One was getting a cell phone (I had never owned one) and buying a Garmin gps system. Last time I drove a long distance reading the maps when traveling alone became a REAL challenge!! The Garmin was a real bonus and the cell phone from Walmart was for security in case I had a problem on the road.

I drove up to Atlantic City taking the route that uses the Cape May Lewes Ferry. Another new adventure as I had never been the primary driver when boarding a ferry! I was talking with a friend and she recommended I check the ferry’s schedule on the internet. I’m sure glad I took her advice because I had no clue that you might need a reservation to board. So, I did just that. I arrived a bit earlier than intended so I was able to board because there was still room. I made a Youtube of the Ferry ride which I thought was great going to Atlantic City.

Coming back was totally different. I didn’t think we were going to be able to board because the water was so rough. I wish I would have been able to hold the camera coming back but it was all I could do to hang on to the hand railings to walk around! Getting a pretzel and coffee was a challenge in that rough water. When we finally landed my car was covered in salt. Washing the car was certainly in order the next day!

Arriving in Atlantic City was pleasant but I had typed the wrong address into the Garmin and missed my hotel by two blocks, lol. The kids arrived a few hours after I arrived, since I was ahead of schedule. I haven’t got a clue where my car had been parked with the valet service of the Tropicana.

You really don’t have to leave the hotels in Atlantic City to enjoy yourself but we did go out on the board walk and walk and walk and walk. We checked out the decor of many of the other casinos and hotels. I did wonder about the crazy push carriages. I even asked the kids why don’t they use golf carts? When I noticed the photos on the walls in my room I realized that the wicker push carts were some sort of historical nuance that is a totally carried on tradition in Atlantic City today.

We walked to a converted pier that was transformed into a shopping mall. One of the kids noticed that they had a water and light show going on daily. We couldn’t stay because we had a reservation but we did go back the next day. More walking but this time in the rainy mist. The water display was well worth the walk and I was able to record a good portion of it from the seats we had, hence the railing.

When we left it was raining much harder, I ,suddenly, realized what the covered wicker push carts had value!!! We rode back to the Tropicana in style and stayed dry too.

The trip was a little different but I think we all had a great time even though I lost at gambling, at least the kids came out ahead. Really great food too!

My last words… I’d go back.

The final update on my General Electric Washer saga!

Well, my friends and readers, I have finally had enough and just KICKED the clunker, GE washing machine, out to the curb! I lost my initial investment but after nearly two years of dirty clothes, I really don’t even care.

I had quite a time finding an old technology, agitator washing machine as the Government’s rules and regulations are no longer allowing the manufacture of old technology washing machines. (Reminds me of big brother, our Government will tell you what is good and you will buy as you have no choices! That is another story.) You can either get one of the last unsold new old tech washers available or buy it from a private individual who thinks they are upgrading their appliance. Good luck to you is all I have to say about that.

This video is of the day that the appliance store delivered my old technology washing machine, a Whirlpool. I was told that all manufacturers will have to comply with new regulations. At least this one will wash with powdered laundry detergent and not the watered down crap they call HE! Also, more expensive. Sorry I digress.

I’m dancing the happy dance now because I got rid of this crappy General Electric model # GTWN4250M1WS. Thank you for reading my Blog.

NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act) Signing by President Obama.

I can’t believe I have heard so little about this on the television networks. To be honest I did hear a little something a while back before the news shifted to the debates and Iowa caucuses. It was my understanding back then that this legislation would have to make its way through Congress. Well, I guess Congress members were to preoccupied with their vacations or maybe the President doesn’t need permission. I’m not a politician so I don’t know the ins and outs of Congress!

Today I was listening to the radio and couldn’t believe my ears. I checked out what I heard at the theGuardian.uk web site. From there I saw that the Guardian had gotten this information from John Turley’s blog post. I even found this information at the Huffington Post. Where is the outrage from the Civil Liberties Union , they should be raising Cain? You would think even our local news stations would make some slight mention of this act.

President Obama comes back from his vacation in Hawaii and somewhere along the line he signs this amended act!

I’m very worried about Americans losing their freedoms as this administration applies rules, regulations and acts. I think all of Washington elites are totally chipping away at our freedoms behind closed doors, on weekends and holidays. I shouldn’t be worried you say. I’ve heard the stories from my Mother and my Aunts and Uncles who immigrated here from Germany after WWII and what is going on in this country isn’t feeling too good to me.
